Women’s Hoops Edged By Coast Guard, 46-44

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 23, 2018) – The USMMA women's basketball team suffered a narrow 46-44 loss to arch-rival Coast Guard on Wednesday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners fall to 12-5 in defeat, while Coast Guard improves to 9-8 on the season.

Three USMMA Players scored in double-figures on the evening. Sophomore Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y) had 11 of her game-high 15 points in the second half. Senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) and freshman Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) both posted 12 points apiece. Senior Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) led all players with five steals and sophomores Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) and Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) each brought down seven rebounds. 

Coast Guard outrebounded the Mariners 62-29 to post back-to-back wins in this rivalry. The Bears got their first win at Kings Point since the 2013-14 despite shooting 25-percent from the field on the night (18-for-72). 

After USCGA opened the first-quarter with an early jumper, USMMA rolled off a 7-0 run to lead 7-2 at 6:24.  The Bears countered with their own 7-0 run, holding Merchant Marine scoreless for 3:16 to go back in front 9-7. Carmon would tie it at 9-apiece at the 3:12 mark and the Mariners tallied six of the next 10 points to lead 15-13 after one quarter. 

Coast Guard outscored the Mariners 11-6 in the second quarter and led 24-21 at halftime and then the Bears used a 12-11 scoring advantage to lead 36-32 after three quarters. 

In the fourth, the Bears built its largest lead of the game, 10 points, 44-34, with 3:28 left. The Mariners would make it very interesting down the stretch, cutting the USCGA's lead down to 44-41 with 58 seconds on a D'Arcy three-pointer. 

Coast Guard would go 2-for-4 at the line to extend the advantage to 46-41. D'Arcy then knocked down a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to make it a one possession game 46-43. Hightower went to the free-throw line with one second left and connected on the first, but the Mariners were called for a violation on the second shot and the Bears escaped with the victory. 

Micaela Martinelli and Brenna Farrington both scored in double-figures for the Bears. Martinelli led the way with 12, while Farrington chipped in 10 points. Breanna Wood had a game-high 14 rebounds in the winning effort.
