Sophomores’ Strength Leads Mariners Past New Rochelle, 74-40, On Monday

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (Dec. 18, 2017) – On Monday afternoon, the USMMA women's basketball team traveled up to Westchester County to face the College of New Rochelle in non-conference action at the Monroe College Athletic Complex. The Mariners defeated the Blue Angels by the final score of 74-40, to improve to 8-2 on the season, while CNR falls to 3-9 after suffering the loss.

All three Mariner sophomores scored in double-figures with Westchester-native Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) leading all players in the game with 21 points to go along with nine rebounds, four steals, three assists and three blocks. Classmate Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) recorded a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 22 rebounds as well as three assists and two blocks and fellow sophomore Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) added 10 points, nine boards and three assists off the bench. 

Like Hightower, senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) also had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while also recording three steals. Freshman Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) contributed eight points, four boards, three assists, one steal and one block and senior Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) had five points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Freshman Kathryn Kelley (Quantico, Va.) rounded out the Mariner scorers with four points and also grabbed down a career-high eight rebounds and dished out one assist. 

For New Rochelle, sophomore Melissa Perez and senior Chelsea Thomas both scored a team-high nine points apiece, while the Blue Angels' three other starters all had four points each – sophomore Dar'Neisha Brice, junior Aaliyah Fields and senior Caitlin Harrison. Harrison also brought down a team-high 14 rebounds on the afternoon. Freshman Madisyn Rosato added five points off the bench. 

The Mariners are back in action in the New Year, when they travel to Bronxville, N.Y., on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2018 for a Skyline Conference contest at Sarah Lawrence College. Tipoff against the Gryphons is scheduled for 7 p.m. at SLC's Campbell Sports Center. Live stats for the contest will be available at this link
