JAMAICA, N.Y. (Dec. 16, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team won its fourth-straight contest with a 71-32 road victory at York College on Saturday afternoon. With the non-conference triumph, the Mariners improve to 7-2 overall on the season, while the Cardinals fall to 3-6 in defeat.
Sophomore Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) notched a career-high 22 points to lead all players and recorded her second double-double in three games with a game-high 11 rebounds. Hightower had a great all-around game, as she also registered five steals, four assists and two blocks.
Freshman Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) also had a career-high in points, as she drained 19 to go along with five steals, which tied the game-high. For the third-straight game, senior Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) contributed 11 points and she also had five steals as well as a game-best seven steals.
Sophomore Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, Md.) had eight points and senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) chipped in with seven points, as D'Arcy also added 10 rebounds, six steals and three assists and Carmon had six rebounds and four steals. Freshmen Kathryn Kelley (Quantico, Va.) and Brianna Halvorsen (Fort Atkinson, Wis.) both had two points off the bench.
For York, senior Giovana Rosado recorded team-highs with 11 points, three assists and three steals and, off the bench, junior Sheahna Roscher brought down eight rebounds to lead the Cardinals.
The Mariners' final game of the calendar year is this Monday, Dec. 18, at non-conference opponent the College of New Rochelle. The contest will be played at the Monroe College Athletic Facility with an updated start time of 4 p.m. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Basketball Schedule Page.
