Mariners Upend Visiting Berkeley, 70-49, On Saturday

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 2, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team defeated visiting Berkeley College, 70-49, on Saturday afternoon at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners improve to 3-1 with the victory, while the Knights fall to 0-3.

Sophomore Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) led all players in the game with 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 on three-pointers. Senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) added 14 points and eight rebounds and sophomore Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) recorded her second straight double-double with 13 points and game-high 13 boards to go along with four blocks, including two just seconds apart in the third quarter. 

Freshman Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) had a great all-around game with eight points and six rebounds as well as a game-high eight steals and five assists. Senior Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) contributed six points and matched Vega's game-high of five assists. 

Off the bench, sophomore Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) had five points and seven rebounds and freshman Brianna Halvorsen (Fort Atkinson, Wis.) scored her first career basket on a fourth-quarter put-back. 

For Berkeley, junior Ayana Ratliff led the way with 18 points and senior Ashley Duplan added 15. Sophomore Ebony Lofton brought down a team-best 12 rebounds and swatted away four Mariner shots, while classmate Crystal Miller contributed five points, a game-high three assists and was one of three Knights with two steals. The visitors had to play the final three-plus minutes with just four players on the court due to foul-outs. 

Up next, Merchant Marine will travel to face Skyline opponent Old Westbury on Tuesday night, Dec. 5. Tipoff against the Panthers is scheduled for 5 p.m. at OW's Clark Athletic Center. Live stats will be available for the game at this link
