KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 21, 2017) – The USMMA women's basketball team lost its home- and season-opener on Tuesday night to visiting Hunter College by the final score of 61-41. The loss drops the Mariners to 0-1 on the season, while the Hawks improve to 3-0.
Sophomore Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) recorded a double-double to lead Merchant Marine with 17 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) chipped in with eight points and 10 boards, while sophomore Shelby Peters (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) added seven and seven to go along with a team-best three blocks.
In her first collegiate contest, freshman Kiana Vega (El Paso, Texas) contributed five points, four rebounds and two assists, while sophomore Taylor Hightower (White Plains, Md.) matched the game-high with 11 rebounds off the bench and also had four points and a team-high four assists.
Hunter never trailed in the game, as they began the night on a 12-5 run and held a 14-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Hawks built their advantage up to double-digits in the latter part of the second, as it reached as high as 15 points (31-16) at 2:45. The visitors went into the locker room at the half with a 35-21 lead.
The Hawks came out strong in the second half, taking advantage of early foul trouble for the Mariners to push their lead to 23 points (46-23) at 5:18. The Mariners then went on a 14-1 run to bring the game back to within just 10 points (47-37) at 8:20 of the fourth, however Hunter only allowed two more baskets after that and held on for the 20-point victory.
For the Hawks, sophomore Theresa Leung led all players on the evening with 27 points. Junior Ashley Arias had 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting and also brought down a team-best nine rebounds.
Merchant Marine will have no competitions through the Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend and will return to the court for its Skyline-opener next Tuesday night, Nov. 28, at home against Purchase College.
