WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 21, 2016) – The USMMA women's basketball team lost its final game of the season on the road at Catholic, 67-47, on Sunday at the DuFour Center in Landmark Conference action. In defeat, the Mariners end the year with a 9-16 (2-14 Landmark) record, while the Cardinals improve to 16-9 (11-5 Landmark) and earn the #3 seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference Tournament.
Sophomore Jenna Wetherington (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) led Merchant Marine with 10 points and a game high 13 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Classmate Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) added 10 points and two assists and sophomore Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) contributed four points and 11 rebounds as well.
The Cardinals opened up the game to an 11-8 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the game was back and forth, but the Mariners out-scored Catholic by three to tie up the game at halftime, 23-23.
USMMA took a lead for a minute and a half in the middle of the third quarter, but that's when Catholic made its move. The Cardinals went on a 17-0 run over the final 4:27 of the quarter. The Mariners tried to fight back in the fourth, but the closest they would cut the deficit to was 12 points with 7:25 left in the game.
For Catholic, junior Bridget Power score a game-high 19 points and junior Melissa Errico contributed 13 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
The Mariners ended the season with a three-win improvement over the 2014-15 campaign and the squad looks forward to competing in the Skyline Conference next year in 2016-17.
