HUNTINGDON, Pa. (Feb. 13, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team lost on the road in a Landmark Conference matchup to host Juniata, 72-50, on Saturday at the Eagles' Memorial Gymnasium. The loss drops the Mariners to 9-12 (2-10 Landmark), while the Eagles improve to 8-15 (3-11 Landmark).
Sophomore Jenna Wetherigton (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) led Merchant Marine and matched her career-high with 16 points, while picking up her second career double-double (her first this season) with 10 rebounds. Junior Allie Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) added 10 points and seven boards off the bench. Sophomores Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) and Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) both contributed 10 points each as well.
The Eagles' opened up the game to a 13-0 advantage and never looked back. The Mariners cut the deficit to eight by the end of the quarter. The host's lead grew to as much as 23 before the Mariners fought back to within 21 at the end of the first half.
In the third quarter, the Eagles' went up by as many as 28 points. USMMA wasn't able to chip away at the deficit to stage a comeback. The Mariners brought it down to 22 points with 2:06 left to play, but couldn't get any closer.
For Juniata, sophomore Rachel Anstine scored a game-high 32 points, while senior Natalie Hager contributed 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Merchant Marine returns to the court this Monday, Feb. 15, when the Mariners square off against Landmark rival Moravian. Tip is set for 7 p.m. at the Greyhounds' Johnston Hall. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available by clicking those links.
