Mariners Edged By St. Joseph’s (L.I.), 56-55, In Overtime

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (Jan. 14, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team lost on the road at St. Joseph's of Long Island in overtime, 56-55, Thursday night at the Golden Eagles' Danzi Athletic Center. The Mariners fall to 5-8 overall on the season, while St. Joe's improves to 5-10.

Sophomore Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) had a career night for the Mariners, as she matched her career-best of 18 points and set a new high with 18 rebounds. Classmate Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) contributed 10 points and Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) added nine.

The game was sent to overtime on a three-pointer by SJC's senior Rynese Smith with three seconds remaining in the fourth. The Mariners had led nearly the entire game up until those closing seconds.

The Golden Eagles took their first lead since the opening seconds of the game with a three-pointer that made the score 51-48 to begin the scoring in overtime at 3:51. The Mariners responded with a 7-1 run capped off by a layup by Carmon with just 55 seconds remaining that put Merchant Marine ahead by three, 55-52.

However, St. Joseph's sophomore Andrea Iavarone hit two straight layups to put the hosts ahead by one. With six seconds remaining after Iavarone's last layup, the Mariners had a chance to change the ending, but a jumper as time expired didn't fall.

The Mariners' highest lead of the night was 10 points, which they held numerous times throughout the game, including at halftime. The Golden Eagles fought back in the third quarter, outscoring USMMA 18-9 in the period to cut the Mariner lead to just one, 39-38.

In the fourth quarter, Merchant Marine built its lead back up to as high as six points, 44-38, halfway through the frame, but a 10-4 run St. Joe's to end the quarter forced overtime.

Iavarone led all players in the game with 19 points and also had a double-double with a team-best 12 rebounds. Two other Golden Eagles' scored in double-figures, as Smith had 13 points and sophomore Caroline Gehring added 11.
