KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 10, 2015) – On Thursday night, the USMMA women's basketball team ended its six-game season-opening homestand with a convincing 67-36 victory over non-conference foe Medgar Evers at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The win, the Mariners' second in a row, moves the squad's record to 4-2 overall on the season, while the Cougars fall to 0-10.
Every player that dressed for Merchant Marine recorded at least two points, as sophomore Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) and Jenna Wetherington (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) led the way with a game-high 12 points each. Carmon also recorded a double-double by bringing down a team-best 13 rebounds. Sophomores Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) and Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) and freshman Miller Torrance (Concord, N.H.) all contributed eight points on the night. The eight for Torrance were a career-high for the rookie.
Sophomore Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) added six points and six boards, classmate Sarah Milafsky (Aurora, Colo.) had five points, junior Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, Iowa) drained four and classmates Allie Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) and Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.) both had two points apiece off the bench.
Medgar Evers had two players score in double-figures. Junior Ashley Desir led the way with 12 points, while classmate Kimonia Mullings registered a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.
Up next, the Mariners will hit the road this weekend for two Landmark Conference games at Elizabethtown on Saturday and at Scranton on Sunday.
