KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 8, 2015) – Three Mariners scored in double-figures and two recorded double-doubles as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team defeated visiting Hunter College, 66-44, on Tuesday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The win improves the Mariners to 3-2, while the Hawks fall to 2-5.
Sophomore Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) scored a career-high 20 points to lead all players in the game. Toler brought down 10 rebounds to record her first career double-double, while also dishing out a game-high five assists. Classmate Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) also had a double-double with 14 points and a game- and career-best 16 rebounds. Sophomore Sarah Milafsky (Aurora, Colo.) added 12 points.
Sophomore Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) led all players off the bench with eight points and classmates Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) and Jenna Wetherington (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) and junior Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.) all had four points to round out the Mariners' scoring.
Hunter also had three players score in double-figures, as junior Widly Couloute led the way with 15 points, freshman Jade Aponte had 13 and senior Ayanna Hudson added 10. Hudson and Couloute recorded double-doubles with 13 and 10 rebounds, respectively.
The Mariners led wire-to-wire and finished the game with their largest lead of the night, 22 points. They turned 20 Hunter turnovers into 21 points, while only allowing the Hawks to score 11 points off of turnovers. Nine of Toler's points came on free throws in the fourth quarter, including six in the final two minutes to seal the win.
Up next, Merchant Marine will host Medgar Evers this Thursday night, Dec. 8, in the final game of the Mariners' season-opening six-game homestand.
