KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 15, 2015) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team lost its Landmark Conference opener on Wednesday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium, 60-45, to Drew University. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 2-1 (0-1 Landmark) on the season, while the Rangers improve to 3-2 (1-0 Landmark) with the victory.
Sophomores Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) and Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) led the squad with nine points each, while classmates Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) and Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) both contributed eight points apiece. Toler and junior Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.) both brought down a team-high six rebounds each.
Three players scored in double-figures for the Rangers, led by senior Courtney Stephens and junior Hannah Miller with 12 apiece. Stephens led all players in the game with nine rebounds. Junior Ryan Jackson added 10 points.
The Mariners will be back at it this Saturday, Dec. 5, when they host Landmark foe Susquehanna. The game is part of a doubleheader with the men's team at the Liebertz Gym and tipoff for the women's game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Live stats and a live video feed of the game are available by following those links.
