KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 30, 2015) – The USMMA women's basketball team defeated non-conference opponent York College, 64-55, on Monday night at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 2-0 on the young season, while the Cardinals fall to 2-5.
Three players scored in double-figures for Merchant Marine, led by sophomore Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.), who shared the game-high with 14 off the bench. Junior Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.) added 12 points (her highest output since her freshman season), while classmate Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, Iowa) contributed 10 points.
Sophomore Sarah Milafsky (Aurora, Colo.) chipped in with a team- and career-high 10 rebounds, while also dishing out a career-best five assists. Classmates Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) and Gabrielle Salazar (Memphis, Tenn.) both scored nine points apiece, for the Mariners. Sophomore Myckenzie Toler (Miller Torrance, Calif.) added five points and freshman Miller Torrance (Concord, N.H.) drained three off the bench.
USMMA jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the opening three-plus minutes of the game, with Wehlburg scoring all eight points. The Cardinals tied the score right back up with four straight, and the lead changed three more times by the time a quick first quarter came to an end with York leading, 16-15.
The Mariners took the lead again early in the second quarter, but at 6:37 the Cards went back ahead and held the advantage until 3:01 when Merchant Marine tied the score at 26-26 on a layup by Carmon. York would end the half on a 7-5 run, however, and took a 33-31 lead into the locker room.
The Mariners responded strong after the halftime break, building up a three-point lead with five straight points to start the third quarter. After the Cardinals tied the score up at 42-42 at 5:07, USMMA would take a two-point lead on a pair of free throws by Milafsky and the Mariners would not relinquish their lead the rest of the night. Their advantaged reached as high as 11 points (58-47 and 60-49) late in the final quarter.
For York, senior Samantha Bond drained 14 points, while classmate Shanelle Baldwin added 13. Seniors Angelika Ruggiano and Jigcara Grant both scored 11 points apiece and Grant led all players in the game with 14 rebounds.
