Women’s Basketball Uses Balanced Attack To Defeat City College, 62-38

NEW YORK (Feb. 12, 2015) – The USMMA women's basketball team defeated the City College of New York, 62-38, on Thursday night at the Beavers' Nat Holman Gymnasium. The win improves the Mariners' record to 5-17 overall, as they eclipse their win total from last season, while CCNY falls to 4-19.

Merchant Marine had 11 of its 12 players record a point and was led by senior Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, Ill.), who tallied a game-high 14 points. Freshman Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) registered 12 points and classmate Jenna Wetherington (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) added eight off the bench. Freshman Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) contributed seven points and brought down a team-best seven rebounds.

The Beavers took their only lead of the game on their second jumper of the first half just under a minute in. The Mariners then rattled off a 17-4 run over the next 10-plus minutes to build up an 11-point lead after a pair of free throws by sophomore Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, Iowa) at 8:29. Hofmann then made a layup just over 30 seconds later to give USMMA its largest lead of the first half, 19-6, at 7:53. The Mariners went on to take a 27-12 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Over the first seven minutes of the second half, Merchant Marine built its lead up to 20 points, 41-21, and saw its advantage grow to as much as 28 points during the stanza, as they cruised to the non-conference victory.

For City College, junior Tiara Brown scored eight points and freshman Liz Durchhalter led all players with eight rebounds.

Up next, the Mariners will host Juniata this Saturday, Feb. 14, in the first game of a Landmark Conference doubleheader with the men's squad. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at O'Hara Hall.
