HUNTINGDON, Pa. (Jan. 17, 2015) – The USMMA women's basketball team lost its Landmark Conference game at Juniata College, 68-53, on Saturday afternoon at the Eagles' Memorial Gymnasium. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 2-12 overall (0-10 Landmark), while Juniata improves to 5-11 (3-4 Landmark).
Three players scored in double-figures for the Eagles – freshman Brianna Wasser registered 12, sophomore Katy Leamer notched 11 and sophomore Olivia Halfpenny contributed 10. Freshman Kelsey Livoti brought down a game-high 12 rebounds.
The score was close the entire first half. The Mariners held a lead for a 2:45 stretch early in the half, but a layup by Eagles' junior Natalie Hager at 14:11 gave Juniata a lead they wouldn't give up until the dying seconds of the half when USMMA freshman Jenna Wetherington (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) hit a layup with 16 seconds to go to tie the score at 29-29, completing a 14-6 run for Merchant Marine over the final eight-plus minutes. That's where it remained into the halftime break.
Over the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Eagles rattled off a 16-4 run to take a 45-33 lead, as their advantage hit double-digits for the first time in the game. Juniata built their lead up to as much as 22 points twice and the Mariners were only able to get back to within 12 points, but that was only with 1:32 to play.
USMMA returns to action on Monday, when the squad plays host to new Landmark Conference opponent Elizabethtown as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. Tipoff between the Mariners and the Blue Jays is scheduled for 2 p.m. at O'Hara Hall.
