KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 10, 2015) – The USMMA men's and women's basketball teams both lost to visiting Susquehanna University on Saturday afternoon at O'Hara Hall. The women's squad dropped the first game of the doubleheader, 73-57, to fall to 2-9 (0-7 Landmark), while the men lost the second game, 82-67, and fall to 2-11 (0-7 Landmark).
Freshman Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) recorded her first career double-double for the women with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds as senior Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, Ill.) led the Mariners and matched the game-best with 13 points. Sophomore Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, Iowa) contributed her first double-digit point performance of the year with 10, including eight points in the second half alone.
For the Crusaders, freshman Courtney Adams led the way with 13 points and nine rebounds off the bench, while senior Jonaida Williams chipped in with 11 points.
On the men's side, junior David Smith (Lakewood, Wash.) scored 23 points for his third 20-plus point performance of the season. Sophomore Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) drained 15 points and also brought down a team-high seven rebounds, which matched the game-best.
Susquehanna was hot from three-point range throughout the game, eventually ending the day with 14 treys, including six by junior Brandon Hedley, who finished the game leading all players with 24 points. Two other Crusaders scored in double-figures as Josh Miller contributed 17 points and sophomore Steven Weidlich had 13.
The Mariner women are back in action on Monday night, Jan. 12, when they travel to Queens to face York College (N.Y.). Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at York's Campus in Jamaica, N.Y.
The men will travel to Hartford, Conn., on Tuesday, Jan. 13, for their next matchup on the road against Trinity College. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. at the Bantams' Ferris Athletic Center.
