SCRANTON, Pa. (Dec. 14, 2014) – The USMMA women's basketball team lost its Landmark Conference game against sixth-ranked Scranton, 70-43, on Sunday afternoon at the Royals' Long Center. The loss drops the Mariners to 2-6 (0-4 Landmark) on the season, while Scranton improves to 7-0 (2-0 Landmark) with the victory.
Senior Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, Ill.) led Merchant Marine with 12 points and also brought down six rebounds, matching the team-high with freshman Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.). Freshman Jenna Wetherington (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) chipped in with eight points and four boards, while classmate Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) contributed four points and five rebounds off the bench.
The Royals were led by senior Meredith Mesaris, who scored a game-high 21 points. Only one other player scored in double-figures for Scranton, sophomore Alexix Roman, who had 10 off the bench. Sophomore Sarah Payonk brought down a team-best six rebounds and senior Lindsay Fluehr added nine assists.
The Mariners now have a three-week break from competition and will return to action in the New Year on Saturday, Jan. 3, when they travel to Washington, D.C., to take on The Catholic University of America.
