SELINSGROVE, Pa. (Dec. 6, 2014) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team dropped a Landmark Conference contest on the road to Susquehanna University, 74-44, on Saturday afternoon at the Crusaders' Houts Gymnasium.

Sophomore Julie Mall (Littlestown, Pa.) led the Mariners with a season-best 10 points, while freshman Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) chipped in with nine points. On the boards, freshman Jenna Wetherington (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) recorded her third double-digit rebounding effort with a game-high 11 rebounds.

Susquehanna had three players score in double-figures, as senior Jonaida Williams and junior Sofia Schedler notched 15 points apiece, and sophomore Nikki Komara added 12.

The Mariners held a couple of early leads in the first half until a 17-6 run over an eight-minute span by the Crusaders gave the home squad a 10-point lead, 22-12, with 9:02 to go in the stanza. USMMA fought back to within six with two straight layups by Carmon, but that was the closest the Mariners would get for the remainder of the action.

Susquehanna shot an impressive 55.6-percent from the field (17-for-27) in the opening half, including a 63.6-percent clip from three-point range (7-for-11). The Crusaders ended the day with 47.2-percent shooting from the field and also took advantage of Merchant Marine turnovers, turning them into 28 points.

With four points in the game, senior Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, Ill.) now sits at 977 points for her career, she is just 23 shy of 1,000.

The Mariners are back home on Wednesday night, Dec. 10, for a home game against non-conference opponent St. Joseph's of Long Island. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
