Women’s Basketball Falls To Drew In Conference-Opener

MADISON, N.J. (Dec. 3, 2014) – The USMMA women's basketball team lost to Drew University by the final score of 80-54 in both teams' Landmark Conference opener on Monday night at the Rangers' Baldwin Gymnasium. The Mariners fall to 1-3 (0-1 Landmark) in defeat, while Drew improves to 4-1 (1-0 Landmark).

Senior Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, Ill.) led all players in the game with 23 points, while freshman Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) contributed seven points off the bench for Merchant Marine. Freshman Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) was the Mariners' leading rebounder with five boards.

Four players scored in double-figures for the Rangers, as senior Breana Wilson led the way with 19 points. Sophomore Ryan Jackson chipped in with 18 points and classmate Hannah Miller notched 15. Junior Courtney Stephens recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Drew built up a 10-point lead over the first seven-plus minutes of the game and would go on to take its largest lead of the half, 15 points (33-18), with just 2:50 remaining in the first. The Rangers scored a total of 19 points off of USMMA turnovers in the opening half, which helped lead them to a 35-21 lead at the halftime break.

In the second half, Drew's lead hit 20 points at 14:52 and it was the same narrative as the first, as the Rangers capitalized with 13 points off of turnovers, while also shooting an impressive 51.5-percent from the field throughout the stanza.

Merchant Marine did have its best shooting percentage of the young season, firing at a 40.7-percetnt clip (22-for-54).

The Mariners return to action on Saturday, when they will travel to Selinsgrove, Pa., to take on Landmark foe Susquehanna University. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. at the Crusaders' Houts Gymnasium.
