Box Score

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 22, 2014) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team lost to visiting Berkeley College, 67-39, on Saturday afternoon at O'Hara Hall. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Knights improve to 3-0.

Freshman Jenna Wetherington (Cocoa Beach, Fla.) recorded her first career double-double, and the first for Merchant Marine this season, as she registered a team-high 12 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Samantha Drake (Centereach, N.Y.) had her first double-digit point performance of the season with 10 off the bench and she also ranked second on the squad with six rebounds.

Berkeley applied an aggressive full court press to start the game and was able to force nine Mariner turnovers over the first five-plus minutes of the game, all while running off a 15-2 run. USMMA's leading scorer, senior Demi VanDerWal (Springfield, Ill.), scored the first two points for the Mariners on a pair of free throws, but got into some early foul trouble and had to spend the final 15 minutes of the half on the bench.

The Knights built their lead up to 20 points, 33-13, with just under two minutes to go in the opening half. Berkeley shot 44.1-percent from the field and forced a total of 16 turnovers in the first half.

Play was pretty even in the beginning of the second half, then the Knights spun off a 13-4 run late to turn at 21-point lead into a 30-point advantage, 67-37, with 2:06 to play. Freshman Sarah Milafsky (Aurora, Colo.) drained two free throws late to close out the scoring on the day.

VanDerWal finished with five points and two blocks, while sophomore Rachel Wehlburg (Herndon, Va.) added four points. Four players finished with two points each – Milafsky sophomore Kelsey Hofmann (Adel, Iowa) and freshman Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) and Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.). Toler also had a team-high three assists, while sophomore Julie Mall (Littlestown, Pa.) contributed with five rebounds.

For Berkeley, senior Milan Germany scored a game-high 18 points. Two other Knights scored in double-figures – junior Champagne Hazel and senior Janay Thomas. Senior Patricia Patterson had a team-high 10 rebounds and Thomas had a game-high six assists.

The Mariners return to action on Monday, Dec. 1, when they travel to Brooklyn, N.Y., to take on Medgar Evers College. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Cougars' Cave.
