Mariners Can’t Tough It Out Against Scranton

The United States Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team (9-13, 4-8) fell to University of Scranton (14-9, 9-3) Friday night by a final score of 76-48 at Liebertz Gym in Kings Point, New York.

The Mariners were on the ropes early as the Royals opened up a substantial lead in the opening minutes of the contest.  Scranton scored 20 of the game's first 25 points as the Mariners couldn't seem to muster the offense to match buckets with their opponents.  Despite trailing 40-17 at halftime, the Mariners played valiantly in the second half nearly doubling their first half output, putting up 31.

Freshman guard Demi Van Der Wal led USMMA in both scoring and rebounds with a game high 18 points and seven boards.  Junior guard Roshenda Josephs also reached double figures notching 12 points and collecting three assists.

Scranton's three-point shooting helped power them to victory as they sank 9 of 18 from beyond the arc.  Four Royals reached double figures led by senior guard Sidney Jaques and sophomore guard Alison Sweeny who scored 13 each.  Junior guard Katherine Torto added a game high six assists.

The loss drops Kings Point to 4-8 in Landmark Conference play and 9-13 overall.  Their next game is against Moravian Saturday afternoon in Liebertz gym at 2:00PM.
