Mariners Fall Short Despite Valiant Effort

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team was upended Friday night by the Cardinals of Catholic University 64-38 at Liebertz gym, in Kings Point, NY.  A steady dose of high tempo offense and full court pressure from the Cardinals stymied the Mariners for most of the night.

Mariner's junior guard Tamara Kaileh led all scorers with thirteen points.  Junior guard Roshenda Josephs and team captain Alicen Heinrich crashed the boards to contribute seven rebounds apiece. In the end, it wasn't enough to achieve their second Landmark Conference win of the season in their attempt climb the standings.

The Cardinals were led in scoring by junior guard Rachel Ferri and sophomore guard Emily Grabiak who contributed 11 points each.  Shooting 35 percent from three point range as a team, Catholic was able to take control of the game early and smother the Mariner's ball movement throughout the rest of the contest.

USMMA fought hard in the second half to make a comeback but just couldn't seem to muster enough offense to combat the Cardinal's attack.

With the loss, the Mariners fall to 4-10 overall and 1-5 in conference play.  However, they have little time to dwell on defeat as they face off against Goucher College in a Landmark Conference matchup Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 4:00pm in Liebertz gym.
