OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Sept. 14, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's cross country team came in fourth place at the New York Tech Invitational on an interesting Saturday morning on the campus of NYIT. After being given only 30-minutes notice that the men's race and women's race were going to flip-flop start times, the Mariner men started off what was supposed to be an 8K race and had all five of their scorers finish in the top-30.
The times for this meet are all very quick for an "8K race," and that's because the lead runner from NYIT made a wrong turn on his own campus course and everyone followed him, cutting out nearly an entire kilometer-loop from the race.
Sophomore Brennan Shute (Annapolis, Md.) was the Mariners' top finisher, coming in 15th in 24:09.81, while classmate Aodhan Meyer (South Kingston, R.I.) was not far behind in 18th with a time of 24:21.23. Freshman Will Bucher (Carlisle, Pa.) crossed in 24:28.90, which was good for 22nd place and sophomore Tyler Pittman (Albuquerque, N.M.) earned a 25th-place showing in 24:37.97. Junior Patrick Porch (Halstead, Kan.) was the fifth scorer for USMMA, as he earned 29 points with a 30th-place finish of 24:46.01.
Senior Michael Dobkowski (Merrick, N.Y.) (35th place/33 points in 24:54.33) and sophomore Nicholas Arima (Honolulu, Hawaii) (40th place/38 points in 25:01.26) stole points away from other teams after crossing sixth and seventh, respectively, for the Mariners.

The Mariners' next race is Saturday, Oct. 5, up at the Hudson Valley Sportsdome in Milton, N.Y., at the 12th Annual MSMC Knight Invitational hosted by fellow Skyline Conference school Mount St. Mary. The men's 8K race is scheduled to begin at 12-noon.
UPDATE ON THE WOMEN'S RACE FROM SATURDAY AT NYIT
Adding to the "bizarre-ness" of the day, the women's race at NYIT on Saturday had a number of runners that did not show in the results when the race was concluded, including two from Merchant Marine who finished in the top-15. The official results for the women's race will not be available until later this weekend.
The following is official – the Mariner women were led by freshman Sayra Raya (Wasco, Calif.), who came in ninth place in the 5K race with a time of 20:39.13. Senior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) was the second runner to cross the finish line for USMMA, coming in 11th place in 21:00.53.
Other finishes (minus the two Mariners and six other runners who were omitted) can be found at this link.
A full recap of the women's race will be available once the complete official results are posted.
