PURCHASE, N.Y. (Nov. 1, 2017) – The USMMA men's cross country team competed in the 2017 Skyline Conference Championship Meet on Wednesday, hosted by Purchase College up in Westchester County. The event was rescheduled from this past Sunday due to inclement weather, and the Mariners' roster was affected by the date change, as just seven runners competed in the 8K race.

The race was extremely close, as Merchant Marine came in second place with 70 points – just three points behind the champions from SUNY Maritime (67 points). St. Joseph's-L.I. (101), Farmingdale State (112) and Purchase (112) rounded out the top five in third through fifth, respectively.

Senior Austin MacElrevey (Lewes, Del.) came in first place to earn the Skyline Runner of the Year Award, as he completed the course in 26:31.67. It was the senior's fourth first-place finish of the season and it marks the second-straight year that a Mariner has won the Skyline Championship race (last year then-sophomore Connor Cole (Alpharetta, Ga.) won the event).

MacElrevey earned First Team All-Skyline accolades with his victory and joined six others on the First Team, including junior teammate John Robertson (Pfafftown, N.C.), who placed seventh with a time of 28:03.03.

Junior James Gunderson (Bloomington, Minn.) and sophomore Michael Dobkowski (Merrick, N.Y.) finished back-to-back in 18th and 19th places, respectively. Gunderson crossed in 28:31.85 and Dobkowski was behind him with a time of 28:43.77. Freshman Gabriel Tapia-Suarez (Leonia, N.J.) rounded out the Mariners scoring with a 27th-place finish in 30:00.53.

Sophomore Jeff Attardi (Cedar Run, N.J.) completed the course in 30:41.60, which was good for 38th-place and freshman David Aranda (Ridgecrest, Calif.) came in 49th with a time of 31:29.67.

At the awards ceremony after the race, the Skyline Conference announced that Head Coach David Lawrence Jr. was selected by the conference head coaches as the Skyline Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year.

The Mariners are back in action this Saturday, Nov. 4, at the ECAC Championship Meet, hosted by Mount St. Mary up in Milton, N.Y. The men's 8K race is scheduled to go off at 11 a.m. at the Hudson Valley Sportsdome.
