SAYVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 30, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's cross country team won the 2016 Skyline Conference Championship Meet on Saturday! Head coach David Lawrence Jr.'s squad came in first place with a total of 39 points, which was the fewest out of the 10-team field. Hosts St. Joseph's of Long Island came in second place with a team score of 68 points in the event, which was held at the Broadway Avenue Park out in Suffolk County.
The championship was the Mariners' first since they won the Skyline back in 2006.
Sophomore Connor Cole (Alpharetta, Ga.) was the Individual Skyline Champion, as he led all runners in the 8K race with a time of 27:16 – earning him All-Skyline First Team accolades. Cole is also crowned as the Skyline Most Outstanding Runner with the first-place finish.
Senior Daniel Wolfer (Hebron, Ky.) also landed on the First Team (Top-7 Finish) after he crossed the finish line in fourth place in 27:27.99.
Three other Mariners garnered All-Skyline Second Team accolades with Top-14 finishes – senior Cameron Green (Lancaster, Calif.) placed ninth with a time of 28:36.99, junior Austin MacElrevey (Lewes, Del.) came in 12th place in 28:51.90 and senior Conor McWeeney (Lake Oswego, Ore.) was right behind him in 13th place with a time of 28:55.98 to close out the Mariners' scoring in the meet.
