Mariners Place Second at West Point Open

The United States Merchant Marine Academy men's cross country team opened their schedule Friday afternoon at the West Point Open hosted by the United States Military Academy.

Conditions were hot, with temperatures reaching 90 degrees on the tough, hilly, 5.4 kilometer course.

USMMA excelled facing heavy compettition from institutions such as West Point, Ramapo College, SUNY Maritime, Monroe College, The City College of New York, and the United States Military Preparatory School, USMMA's men's team placed second with a score of 76, surpassing Ramapo College who scored 79.

"It was a good early season measure," said Head Coach Greg Lott.  "We wanted to see how we would stack up against Ramapo, a team that finished a few spots ahead of us at the NCAA regional championships last season.  Edging them out was a good start to our campaign.  I'm excited to see where our team stands next week when we run a full 8k course"

Freshman John Weldon topped the list of Mariners as he finished 19th overall and third among division-III athletes.  Senior Daniel Baxter placed 21st overall and fourth among division-III competitors.

Rounding out the top five for Kings Point were freshman Brendan Dooley, sophomore David McGowan (pictured), and freshman Andrew Walsh.

The Mariners will have a week of rest before running the Purchase College Invitational next Saturday, September 8th
