NEW HAVEN, Conn. (May 16, 2019) – The USMMA men's track & field season came to an end on Thursday, the final day of the two-day ECAC Division III Outdoor Championship Meet, hosted by Southern Connecticut State University. The Mariners placed ninth out of the 25 teams that scored at the event with a total of 36 team points. Rutgers-Newark won the meet with 87 points, while Marywood (79) and Wesley (72) rounded out the top-three.
Merchant Marine had three top-three finishes – senior David Collins (North Kingstown, R.I.) came in second place in the hammer with a hurl of 48.98m (160-08), earning a team-best eight points for the Mariners. Freshman Tyler Pittman (Albuquerque, N.M.) placed third in the 3000m steeplechase in 10:26.55 and sophomore Patrick Porch (Halstead, Kan.) crossed the finish line of the 10000m in third place in 37:58.41. Both Pittman and Porch added six points each to the total team score.
There were also two fifth-place showings for USMMA, earning four team points each – senior James Gunderson (Bloomington, Minn.) in the 3000m steeplechase (10:38.62) and freshman Nicholas Arima (Honolulu, Hawaii) in the 5000m (16:23.17).
Senior Kijona Henley (Smithfield, Va.) and freshman Lucas Jordan (Littleton, Colo.) both placed sixth in their respective events to grab three points apiece – Henley in the 110m hurdles in 16.25 and Jordan in the 5000m in 16:34.40. Two Mariners had eighth-place finishes to earn one point each for the team – Arima in the 1500m (4:24.56) and freshman Aodhan Meyer (South Kingstown, R.I.) in the 5000m (16:51.02).
