• 76 Student-Athletes Named To Skyline Conference Winter & Spring Academic Honor Roll

    The Skyline Conference announced its Academic Honor Roll for the 2018-19 Winter and 2019 Spring seasons on Tuesday and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy had a total of 76 student-athletes over nine different sports recognized for their hard work in the classroom during their respective seasons.

    The United States Merchant Marine Academy held its 2019 Awards Convocation on Friday morning at the Ackerman Auditorium as part of Kings Point Weekend festivities, which culminates with commencement exercises on Saturday. Four major athletic award winners were announced during the ceremony – the Male and Female Athletes of the Year as well as the two Coaches of the Year – along with a number of other athletic awards and honors.

    The Skyline Conference announced the postseason award winners and All-Conference Teams for men’s tennis on Monday and two members of the USMMA tennis team were recognized for their performances for the Mariners this year. Senior Daniel Zakrevski (Forest Hills, N.Y.) was selected by the conference head coaches to the All-Skyline First Team, while junior Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) earned an All-Skyline Second Team selection.

    The USMMA tennis team snapped its two-match losing skid with a huge 6-3 home Skyline victory over Mount St. Mary on Tuesday afternoon. The win clinches a postseason berth for the Mariners, as they secure the #4 seed in the upcoming Skyline Tournament with their record moving to 6-5 overall (4-3 Skyline). The Knights end their season 9-4 (3-4 Skyline) with the loss.

    The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tennis team lost its Skyline Conference match to defending league champion Yeshiva University, 9-0, late Tuesday night at the Binghamton Racquet Club in New Jersey. The defeat drops the Mariners’ record to 5-4 (3-3 Skyline), while the Maccabees improve to 12-7 (7-0 Skyline) with the victory.

    After an hour-and-a-half delay to let the courts dry after a torrential downpour during the middle of the night, the USMMA tennis team eventually swept visiting Skyline Conference opponent Sarah Lawrence College, 9-0, on Saturday at the Brooks Stadium Courts. The victory snaps the Mariners’ three-match losing streak and moves their record to 5-3 (3-2 Skyline), while the Gryphons fall to 1-3 (1-3 Skyline) in defeat.

The accolade comes after Booth’s performances in the Mariners’ two matches last week – a 7-2 home non-conference win over Ramapo on Friday and a 7-2 home Skyline loss to Yeshiva on Sunday.
