Mariners Earn Final Skyline Tournament Berth With 6-3 Home Win Over Mount St. Mary

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 23, 2019) – The USMMA tennis team snapped its two-match losing skid with a huge 6-3 home Skyline victory over Mount St. Mary on Tuesday afternoon. The win clinches a postseason berth for the Mariners, as they secure the #4 seed in the upcoming Skyline Tournament with their record moving to 6-5 overall (4-3 Skyline). The Knights end their season 9-4 (3-4 Skyline) with the loss. 

Prior to the start of the match, the Merchant Marine tennis program paid tribute to its five graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony honoring Matt Hazelwood (Altavista, Va.), William Peterson (Midlothian, Va.), Daniel Zakrevski (Forest Hills, N.Y.), Madeline Smith (Mesa, Ariz.) and Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.). On the court, the Mariners went up 2-1 after doubles action with the #2 pairing of Deeter and junior Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) claimed an 8-2 win and the #3 duo of Smith and freshman John Guettlein (Arvada, Colo.) earning a hard-fought 8-6 victory after letting a 6-3 lead slip. 

In singles action, the first two matches to end went in favor of USMMA, as Deeter won easily, 6-0, 6-0 at #5 and junior Blaine Mueller (Meridian, Miss.) took a 6-1, 6-2 decision at #6 to put the Mariners on the brink of victory. 

The win was clinched when Guettlein secured his #4 matchup, 6-3, 6-0. Zakrevski also added a point for Merchant Marine with his 6-2, 6-2 win at #2.

The Mariners close out the regular season this Friday, April 26, with a road match at former Landmark Conference foe Drew University. First serve is slated for 5 p.m. in Madison, N.J.
