Day 1 Recap (From Wednesday)

GREENSBORO, N.C. (March 21, 2019) – All six USMMA men's swimmers down at the NCAA National Championship Meet are All-Americans! The Mariners' two relay teams (the 200 free relay and the 400 medley relay) had a great evening session down in North Carolina, earning a total of 32 points for the team, which currently places them in 14th place halfway through the meet.

The 200FR team of sophomore Daniel Moore (Riverview, Fla.), junior Nolan Monahan (Stafford, Va.) and sophomores Jack Higgins (Needham, Mass.) and Jack Welch (Chesapeake, Va.) competed in the championship finals heat early in the session and came in eighth place in the event with a time of 1:21.85. That earned the first 22 team points of the meet for the Mariners.

At the end of the night, in the consolation finals of the 400MR, the USMMA squad of junior Caelin Weaver (Olive Branch, Miss.), freshman Patrick Tolloti (Dover, Ohio), Monahan and Moore beat their own Academy record which they set earlier today, as they placed 12th in the event in 3:18.87. The relay team exceeded expectations, as they were seeded 21st going into the meet. Their placing added 10 more points to Merchant Marine's team total.

The six All-Americans are a single-season high for the men's swim & dive program during the tenure of 18th-year head coach Sean Tedesco, and, as of right now, the Mariners are bringing home a total of eight All-American certificates (Monahan and Moore earned two each).

The Mariners are back at it tomorrow for their lightest day of the four-day meet. Just two swimmers will be competing in one event, as Monahan and Tolloti will take part in the 100 breaststroke. Monahan is seeded eighth in the 100 breast, while Tolloti is not far behind in 11th. The Preliminary Session begins at 10 a.m. Friday morning.
