KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 2, 2019 – UPDATED Feb. 4, 2019) – The USMMA men's swimming & diving team defeated nationally-ranked #13 Rowan University, 192-108, on Saturday afternoon in the O'Hara Hall Pool. It was the first time the Mariners defeated a ranked opponent since they beat the Profs two seasons ago at home. With the win, Merchant Marine completes the regular season with a 7-2 record in dual meets, while the Rowan drops to 6-4.

Prior to the meet, the Mariners paid tribute to their seven graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony honoring Dave Argueta (Englewood, N.J.), Bryce Carroll (Wellsville, Pa.), Thomas Curry (Los Angeles, Calif.), Nick Fox (Clive, Iowa), Christopher Kahl (Solomons, Md.), Matheus Macedo (Elk Grove, Calif.) and Jack Olsen (Milford, N.H.)

The 400 medley relay team of Kahl, juniors Nolan Monahan (Stafford, Va.) and Caelin Weaver (Olive Branch, Miss.) and sophomore Jack Welch (Chesapeake, Va.) started the meet with a victory in 3:28.84.

The Mariners took first and second place in the following events:

  • 200 Free: Sophomore Daniel Moore (Riverview, Fla.) (1:47.21) and junior Michael Moore (Los Alamos, N.M.) (1:47.87)
  • 100 Back: Kahl (52.50) and freshman Matthew Mizell (Merritt Island, Fla.) (53.05)
  • 50 Free: Welch (21.54) and Dan Moore (22.57)
  • 100 Back: Kahl (1:54.38) and Mizell (1:58.04)
  • 200 Breast: Monahan (2:07.23) and Mike Moore (2:14.35)
  • 200 IM: Kahl (1:59.32) and Mike Moore (2:01.83)

The Mariners also got wins by Monahan in the 100 breast (57.97), and the 200 free relay team of Dan Moore, Welch, Weaver and Monahan finished the meet with a win in 1:25.29.

On the diving boards, in an 11-dive exhibition on the one-meter board, sophomore Calvin Kim (Bellevue, Wash.) earned an NCAA Qualifying Mark for the first time this season with a score of 443.33. He now needs to hit the mark one more time on that board to join his teammates sophomore Gillem McMillan (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Curry in officially qualifying for the NCAA Diving Regional Meet in early March.

McMillan won both the one-meter board (315.85) and the three-meter board (318.10), while Curry came in second in the one-meter with a score of 296.03.
