Men’s Swimming & Diving Sweeps Drew And Goucher On Senior Day Saturday

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 31, 2015) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's swimming & diving team defeated visiting Drew University and Goucher College on Saturday in a Landmark Conference Tri-Meet at the O'Hara Hall Pool.

Before action got underway, the program paid tribute to its graduating seniors Ben Gabbard (Vacaville, Calif.), Jacob Hardig (Cincinnati, Ohio), Sean Higgins (Anacortes, Wash.), Kevin Lindgren (Palm City, Fla.), Hunter Rowan (Matthews, N.C.) and Aloysius Vita (Davidsonville, Md.) with a Senior Day ceremony. In the pool, the Mariner men were victorious over the Rangers, 74-31, and the Gophers, 70-35.

Lindgren led the way for Merchant Marine with three victories. He led off the 200 medley relay that touched first in the opening event of the day in 1:37.50. He then went on to win the 200 individual medley in 2:02.58 and the 500 free in 4:52.51.

Three other Mariners won two events on the day. Sophomore Austin Butt (Westminster, Md.) and Rowan were both members of the 200 medley relay team and, individually, Butt won the 50 free (22.10), while Rowan touched first in the 100 fly in 53.58 (a season-best time by one second). Junior diver Gerrit Porter (Houston, Texas) won both diving competitions – the one-meter dive (261.23) and the three-meter dive (266.93).

Also picking up wins were sophomore Stone Hewitt (Destin, Fla.), who was on the 200MR team, sophomore Kevin Sweetman (Austin, Texas) in the 1,000 free (10:20.59), freshman Nick Lambson (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the 200 free (1:48.19), junior Blair Roberts (South Jordan, Utah) in the 100 back (58.15) and sophomore Karl Sasse (Frederick, Md.) in the 100 breast (59.17).

The Mariner divers will be in action this weekend, Feb. 7, when they take part in the NYU Invitational in Manhattan. Both the swimming & diving teams will be in action together the weekend of Feb. 13-15, when they take part in the Landmark Conference Championship Meet, which will be held at the Germantown Swim Center in Germantown, Md.
