Three Mariner Men Qualify For Nationals, Including Two Divers, At TCNJ Lions Invite

EWING, N.J. (Dec. 7, 2014) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's swimming & diving team travelled to the Garden State this past weekend to compete in the Lions Invite, hosted by The College of New Jersey. In just their second meet of the season, the Mariners had three student-athletes qualify for nationals, including two divers, while finishing in fourth place out of a field of teams that are in mid-season, near-championship form.

On Saturday, junior William Porter (Houston, Texas) finished in second place in both three-meter diving competitions, finishing with qualifying scores of 530.65 (11 dives) and 310.20 points (six dives). Sophomore Ryan Mavity (St. Joseph, Mich.) qualified for nationals on Sunday in the one-meter diving competition (11 dives) by placing fourth with a time of 464.35.

Also on Sunday, senior Kevin Lindgren (Palm City, Fla.) finished in second place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:51.46, which qualifies him for NCAAs. Lindgren also placed sixth in the 100 back on Saturday in 52.78.

The Mariners had two other top eight finishes at the meet, as sophomore Joshua Jepsen (San Diego, Calif.) and freshman Jordan Weaver (Olive Branch, Miss.) finished back-to-back in seventh and eighth place, respectively, in the 200-yard butterfly. Jepsen touched in a season-best 2:03.17, while Weaver also had his best effort of the season, finishing with a time of 2:04.18.

USMMA returns to the pool this Wednesday, Dec. 10, when the squad travels to Division II opponent Queens College. First race is scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m. at the Knights' Fitzgerald Pool in Flushing, N.Y.
