KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 27, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team hosted Skyline Conference opponent Yeshiva University on a very rainy Sunday afternoon at Brooks Stadium in the Mariners' final game of the regular season. USMMA came out on top of the Macs, 4-1, to finish 10-6-1 (7-3-1 Skyline) and clinch the #3 seed in the upcoming Skyline Tournament, while YU drops to 2-10-1 (0-9-1 Skyline) with the loss.
It was also Senior Day, but due to the weather the ceremony to honor the Mariners' 10 seniors was relocated to Land Hall after the game. The men's soccer program celebrated the careers of David Germain (Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y.), Matthew Austin (Rockledge, Fla.), Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.), Austin Flores (Wichita, Kan.), Patrick McLaughlin (Allentown, Pa.), Matt McCurnin (Newark, Del.), Shane Swisher (Charlotte, N.C.) and team captains Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.), Sam McGill (Canton, Ohio) and Alex Madonna (Gibsonia, Pa.). A photo gallery from the ceremony can be viewed at this link.
On the pitch, Roros opened the scoring pretty quickly for the Mariners with his team-leading sixth goal of the year in the fifth minute when he outran a Yeshiva defender to catch up to a great lead pass by sophomore David Kelly (Lutherville, Md.). The senior fired a shot low that caught the right post before finding the back of the net. Shortly after the goal, Yeshiva starting keeper, freshman Benjamin Brener was forced out of the game with an injury and was replaced by junior Sagi Badash.
The Maccabees kept the Merchant Marine defense on its toes, however, producing a couple of solid scoring chances throughout the opening half. Milner had to turn aside three YU shots in the first 45 minutes of the game.
In the 33rd minute, Yeshiva was booked for a yellow card on a reckless foul in the box and USMMA was awarded a penalty kick. Kelly was called on to take the PK and he converted to double the Mariner lead. It was his second goal of the year.
Another senior got on the board for the Mariners to make it 3-0 in the 40th minute, as Flores tallied the first marker of his career assisted by Zach Lysakowski (Reading, Pa.), who sent a beautiful through-ball from the far side through what seemed like five players to find Flores streaking in alone down the near side of the box.
The Mariners took that 3-0 lead into the half, with Badash making four saves for the Macs to Milner's three.
In the second half, McLaughlin made it 4-0 in the 70th minute off of a double assist. From midfield, junior Joe Clark (Baltimore, Md.) sent the ball down the near side to Lysakowski, who passed the ball across the box to McLaughlin, who corralled and fired low to the right for his second of the season.
The Maccabees got one back in the 81st minute when junior Isaac Bendahan headed the ball off the crossbar and in off a corner kick by freshman Refael Minsky to spoil the shutout bid.
Milner finished the day with six saves to earn the victory between the pipes, while Badash turned aside seven Mariner shots in the losing effort.
As the #3 seed, Merchant Marine will host the first round of the Skyline Tournament next Saturday, Nov. 2, against the yet-to-be determined #6 seed. More information on the first-round matchup will be available on www.USMMASports.com later next week.
