Soccer Blanks St. Joseph’s-Long Island, 2-0, At Home On Saturday

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2019) – The USMMA men's soccer team defeated visiting St. Joseph's-Long Island, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon in Skyline Conference action. With the win, the Mariners improve to 6-3 (3-0 Skyline), while the Golden Eagles drop to 2-6 (2-2 Skyline) in defeat. 

Prior to the game, both teams and the fans at Brooks Stadium were treated to a special fly-by of two U.S. Marine Corps MV-22 Ospreys, with crews of USMMA alums Vito Basso '13 (lacrosse) and Nick Vogel '15 (soccer). In the action on the field, the game was scoreless at halftime, with St. Joseph's holding a 4-1 advantage in shots, but the Mariners had the only shot on goal of the first 45 minutes which was turned aside by SJC junior keeper Tyler Flaherty. 

In the second half, the Mariners first eight of the first 10 shots in 30 minutes of action. They finally found the back of the net in the 77th minute, when a penalty kick was awarded. Senior Alex Madonna (Gibsonia, Pa.) was called on to take it and his shot was saved, but he followed up and buried the rebound to open the scoring. It was his fourth goal of the season.

Merchant Marine kept attacking, firing off two more shots in the next four minutes before again cashing in on a rebound in the 81st minute. This time is was sophomore Cole Blake (Parker, Colo.) that scored his first goal of the year when he converted after senior Matt McCurnin's (Newark, Del.) initial shot hit the cross bar. McCurnin got credit for the assist on the tally. 

In the final 10 minutes, St. Joe's outshot the Mariners, 4-1, but senior Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.) made two saves as part of his three-save performance over the 45 minutes, as he picked up his third solo shutout of the year.

For St. Joseph's, Flaherty finished with four saves in the losing effort.
