KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 21, 2019) – Senior Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) tallied what proved to be the game-winning goal in just the fifth minute, while junior Zach Lysakowski (Reading, Pa.) added a pair of tallies as the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team cruised to a 4-0 victory against Skyline Conference foe Sarah Lawrence Saturday night in the league-opener. The Mariners improved to 4-3 (1-0 Skyline), while the Gryphons saw their record drop to 3-4-1 (0-1-1 Skyline).

Junior Ryan Haines (Marlton, N.J.) added a goal for USMMA, while seniors Sam McGill (Canton, Ohio), Alex Madonna (Gibsonia, Pa.) and Matt McCurnin (Newark, Del.) all registered one assist apiece. In goal, senior Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.) made three saves in 78:54 of action and combined with freshman Chase Miller (Boise, Idaho) on the shutout.

The Mariners pressured early and often as Lysakowski missed wide in the second minute before Madonna had a shot blocked in the third minute. Roros then put USMMA up 1-0 with his unassisted tally in the fifth minute as he dribbled in from the right and blasted a low shot into the back of the net.

USMMA kept the pressure on in the 10th minute as Cole Blake (Parker, Colo.) had a header saved by Sarah Lawrence keeper Aaron Ashery. The Gryphons then tried to equalize in the 11th minute, but Sinjin Mendenhall had his shot attempt saved by Milner.

The Mariners were a bit unlucky in the 15th minute as a Roros effort found the crossbar. Madonna followed seconds later with a shot of his own, but Ashery was able to make the stop. The USMMA offense continued to create opportunities to extend the lead only to have Ashery come up big in goal for the visitors. Ashery saved a Joe Clark (Baltimore, Md.) attempt in the 28th minute and stopped a McGill shot in the 34th minute before also stopping Connor Damaré (Slidell, La.)  in the 35th minute.

After Milner preserved the lead with a pair of saves in the 39th minute, a free kick from 20-yards out helped the Mariners get their second goal in the 43rd minute. McGill took the free kick and found Haines, who flicked a header past Ashery to give USMMA a 2-0 advantage at halftime.

Perhaps the best chance of the game for the Gryphons came in the 49th minute. A defensive save by Abram Ehrhorn (Papillion, Neb.), however, kept the visitors off the board.

Following another Ashery save in the 51st minute, USMMA made it a 3-0 game in the 67th minute. A ball from Madonna bounced off a pair of defenders and ended up at the feet of a wide open Lysakowski, who slotted home his first goal of the game.

Sophomore David Kelly (Lutherville, Md.) had a shot saved by Ashery in the 69th minute before McCurnin found the crossbar with an attempt in the 75th minute as the Mariners looked to extend the lead. Damare followed with a shot in the 76th minute, but Ashery was there yet again for the save.

Lysakowski then gave the Mariners a 4-0 lead in the 77th minute with his second goal of the game. McCurnin opened the play with a run down the right side before sending a pass across the box. Lysakowski was wide open once again and beat Ashery for the final margin.

The Mariners return to action on Wednesday night, Sept. 25, with a 7:30 p.m. road game against Skyline rival SUNY Maritime. Live stats and a live video feed for that game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page
