KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 10, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team scored three second-half goals to defeat visiting Purchase College, 3-0, on Wednesday night at Brooks Stadium. With the victory, the Mariners improve to 8-3-2 (4-2-1 Skyline), while the Panthers fall to 4-4-2 (2-2-1) in defeat.

The game was scoreless after the first half where USMMA outshot PC, 12-0. The Mariners had six shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, including one that was saved by a Panther defender at the goal line, however they were unable to find the back of the net.

The first tally of the night came in the 71st minute, when junior Alex Madonna (Gibsonia, Pa.) received a feed pass from classmate Matt McCurnin (Newark, Del.) and fired a shot low past Purchase's sophomore keeper Jordan Meade.

Just 44 seconds after that goal, USMMA benefited from a foul in the box by the Panthers and were awarded a penalty kick. Senior Joe Springer (Bowie, Md.) was called upon to take the PK and beat Meade low to the right to put the Mariners ahead, 2-0.

The third goal of the night was a highlight-reel goal, as freshman Abram Ehrhorn (Papillion, Neb.) converted a beautiful diving header off the crossbar and in off of a great cross from the near side from classmate Liam Cashmore (Silverdale, Wash.)

The Mariners finished the night with a 25-2 advantage in shots, including 12 on goal. Meade made eight saves in the losing effort, while Merchant Marine junior keeper Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.) picked up his sixth shutout of the season (fifth solo), without even facing a shot on goal thanks to the terrific defense led by starters senior Sam Ney (Vicenza, Italy), junior Sam McGill (Canton, Ohio), junior Patrick McLaughlin (Allentown, Pa.) and sophomore Luke Sturtz (Norman, Okla.)

Up next, the Mariners will host St. Joseph's-Brooklyn this coming Saturday, Oct. 13, beginning at 1 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Prior to opening kickoff, the Mariners will host a special Senior Day ceremony for their five graduating seniors – Springer, Ney, Neil Painter (New Cumberland, Pa.), Wagner Mogga (Kiambu, Kenya) and Michael Mischler (Monroe Township, N.J.)

Live stats and a live video stream of Saturday's game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Soccer Schedule Page.
