BRONX, N.Y. (March 17, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team traveled up to The Bronx on Saturday night for its Skyline Conference-opener against Mount St. Vincent. The game was played at Manhattan College's Gaelic Park. The Mariners downed the Dolphins, 20-3, to improve their record to 5-0 (1-0 Skyline), while CMSV falls to 1-1 (0-1 Skyline) in defeat.
Senior Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) scored four goals in the first quarter and reached the 150-goal plateau on his third of the night. He finished the game tying with classmate Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) for the game-high with six points. Coll found the back of the net five times and dished out one assist, while Treon had two goals and four helpers.
Sophomore Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) added four points on two tallies and two assists, while freshman Tristan Kelehan (Elkridge, Md.) contributed three points on two goals and one helper. Four Mariners recorded two points each, as sophomores Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.), Stephen Powers (Tucson, Ariz.) and John Maudsley (Wilton, Conn.) all scored twice and sophomore Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist.
Also finding the back of the net for USMMA were senior Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) and freshman Michael Carbone (Hamilton, N.J.), while dishing out one assist were sophomores Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) and Jackson Misner (Tampa, Fla.).
Junior Charley Hughes (Baltimore, Md.) took a majority of the Mariners' face-offs on the night, as he was 12-for-14 from the X and tied for the game-high with eight groundballs. Freshman Kyle Buser (Babylon, N.Y.) was 6-for-6 on faceoffs and also had eight GBs and classmate Michael Zurlo (Millersville, Md.) went 5-for-7 with five groundballs. Buser, Roros and Morsberger all had a team-best two caused turnovers each.
In goal, freshman Brendan Kane (Lewes, Del.) played the first quarter and earned the victory after making two saves. Classmate Shannon Byrne II (Severna Park, Md.) finished the final 45 minutes and made three saves.
Mount St. Vincent had three different goal scorers – junior Anthony Pedatella, freshman Thomas Hanley and senior James Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald also picked up a team-best four groundballs and led all players in the game with three caused turnovers. Senior goalie Frank Bakakos made eight saves in three quarter of action and suffered the loss, while sophomore Christian Brody took over for the final 15 minutes and also had eight saves.
Up next, the Mariners host Western Connecticut State for a non-conference contest this coming Wednesday, March 21. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Brooks Stadium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Lacrosse Schedule Page.
