Men’s Lacrosse Wins Home-Opener 20-7 Over New England College

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 10, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team claimed a 20-7 home victory over visiting New England College on Saturday at Brooks Stadium. The win improves the Mariners' record to 3-0, while the Pilgrims fall to 0-3 in defeat. 

Senior Nick Treon (Danville, Pa.) hit two career milestones in the contest, as he reached the 100-assist and 200-point plateaus during his game-high nine-point effort. Treon scored three times and added six assists on the day. He became just the ninth Mariner all-time to record 200 points. 

Junior Jack Renard (San Clemente, Calif.) added six points on four goals and two assists, while senior Pat Coll (Clifton Park, N.Y.) contributed three tallies for his third-straight hat-trick to start the year. 

Three other Mariners found the back of the net twice – senior Tucker Dodson (Charleston, S.C.) and sophomores Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) and Liam Connors (Bellmore, N.Y.) – and four had one goal apiece – junior Lane Schmidt (North East, Md.), sophomores Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) and Jackson Misner (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman Kyle Orton (Lewes, Del.). Morsberger also added an assist. 

In goal, freshman Brendan Kane (Lewes, Del.) earned the victory after making nine saves in over 36 minutes of action. Classmate Shannon Byrne II (Severna Park, Md.) finished the final 23-plus minutes and had four saves. 

Freshman Kyle Buser (Babylon, N.Y.) won a team-best nine faceoffs on 16 attempts and picked up a game-high eight groundballs. Defensively, four Mariners tied for the game-high with two caused turnovers apiece – Dodson and sophomores Jake Erickson (Cicero, N.Y.), Troy Brennan (Allentown, Pa.) and Tom Repasi (Hollywood, Md.)

For the Pilgrims, senior Matt Richard picked up six points on three goals and three assists, while sophomore Jacob Blanchette and freshman Patrick Stories both added a goal and an assist each. Junior goalie William Platt suffered the loss after allowing 18 goals in three quarters with 10 saves. 

The Mariners are back in action on Wednesday night, March 14, when they host non-conference opponent Manhattanville College beginning at 8 p.m. The game is part of a lacrosse doubleheader at Brooks Stadium with the women's team.
