USMMA Sunk by Late Goal

The United States Merchant Marine Academy's lacrosse team dropped a heart-breaker Saturday afternoon by a score of 9-8 to the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson College.

With 58 seconds remaining in the game, President's sophomore midfielder Casey Smallwood wristed a shot into the back of the Mariner's net, breaking an 8-8 tie and giving Washington & Jefferson the victory.

Kings Point fell behind early, giving up the first three goals of the contest.  Despite their slow start, they battled back pulling within two at the half.  The Mariners shined in the third quarter, outscoring their opponents 3-0 and carried a 6-5 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Both teams traded goals in the final quarter, with neither falling to a deficit greater than one.  However, the late goal netted by Smallwood was too much for USMMA to overcome, as Washington & Jefferson won their first Landmark Conference game.

Sophomore midfielder Andrew Kratch played a standout game for the Mariners winning a game high 10 of 17 faceoffs, collecting seven ground balls, and adding a goal and an assist.  Senior captain Tyler Spaulding (pictured right) led the team in scoring tallying three goals and an assist, while junior goalkeeper Matt Kantor made 14 saves in the losing effort.

The Mariners will finish their season next Saturday, April 28th as they take on Landmark Conference leading Goucher College in Kings Point at 1:00 PM.
