Men’s Basketball Suffers 78-66 Road Loss In Skyline-Opener At Farmingdale State

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (Dec. 12, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team lost on the road at Farmingdale State, 78-66, Thursday night in a Skyline non-divisional game at the Rams' Lynch Sports Center. In defeat, the Mariners' record falls to 3-5 (0-1 Skyline), while FSC goes to 4-6 (1-1 Skyline). 

Two players produced double-digit scoring efforts for USMMA - junior James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) had a team-best 16 points, while sophomore Jack Bucher (Carlisle, Pa.) scored 10. Three other Mariners scored nine points each - senior Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas), sophomore Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) and freshman Kevin Doty (Bayport, N.Y.) off the bench. 

Green, sophomore Isaiah Nix (Yorktown, Va.) and freshman Brandon Bomboy (Yorktown, Va.) all tied for the team-lead with four rebounds. Green also led all players with six assists and four steals, while Nix had a game-high four blocks. 

The Mariners started the game on a 10-2 run, but the Rams responded with an 11-0 run to take the lead. The hosts expanded their advantage to as many as 12 points, 30-18, at 7:08, but Merchant Marine fought back to within five twice, including at 1:39, when a 3 by Walsh made it 38-33. Farmingdale went into the halftime break with a 41-35 lead. 

The Mariners kept the game close for the first eight minutes of the second half, coming to within just three points, 52-49, at 12:20 on a layup by Doty. However, the Rams answered with a 9-2 run to take a double-digit lead. USMMA was only able to come back to within eight points twice in the next few minutes, as Farmingdale kept the Mariners at a safe distance the remainder of the night. 

For the Rams, senior Hunter Schenkel drained a game-best 27 points, while classmate Ryan Kennedy added 25. Fellow senior Anthony Miller Jr. added 11 points and sophomore De'Shawn Todman led all players in the game with 10 rebounds. 

Up next, the Mariners will compete in the West Palm Beach Tournament at Oxbridge Academy in Florida Friday-Saturday, Dec. 20-21.
