Box Score

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Nov. 25, 2019) – The USMMA men's basketball team earned a 90-83 road victory in overtime over non-conference opponent Medgar Evers on Monday night at MEC's Cougars' Cave. With the win, the Mariners improve to 2-3 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 1-6 in defeat.

The 90 points were the most that Merchant Marine has scored since a 93-92 overtime loss at home to Mount St. Mary two seasons ago on Jan. 13, 2018.

Four players scored in double-figures for the Mariners. Junior Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) led the way with 20 points including four three-pointers, while classmate James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) added 17 along with a team-best seven assists and four steals. Senior Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) drained 15 points with five helpers and sophomore Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) recorded his second-straight double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.

Sophomore Isaiah Nix (Yorktown, Va.) nearly had a double-double with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds off the bench, while freshman Dante Spina (Miami, Fla.) contributed offensively with nine points.

Medgar Evers had the lead over the most of the first 10 minutes of the game, before Barnes hit three-straight 3's during a 9-3 run that gave the Mariners a 26-17 advantage at 8:25. The hosts fought back to tie the game up at 32-32 with 1:17 to go, but a three-point play by Walsh with 47 seconds closed out the scoring in the half with USMMA up, 35-32.

The Cougars started the second half on an 8-1 run to match their biggest lead of the night – four points – 40-36 at 17:43. The Mariners responded quickly with a 10-2 run to go up 46-42 at 12:42 and then later built up a game-best nine-point lead, 64-55, at 4:32. However, Medgar Evers stormed all the way back with nine-straight points to tie the game up at 64 at 3:17.

Merchant Marine went back up by as many as five points, 71-66, with just 44 seconds left, but the Cougars hit a three with 32 seconds left and then a game-tying jumper with just seven ticks left. The Mariners missed a potential buzzer-beating three, sending the contest to overtime.

USMMA scored the first five points of overtime and later went up by eight, 82-74, with just 1:27 to play. Medgar Evers pulled to within three with just 35 seconds left, but the Mariners were clutch from the free-throw line in the closing seconds, as senior Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) hit both his freebies (part of his five-point night) and Green closed out the scoring with a pair of free throws. Green scored a total of nine points in the extra frame.

For Medgar Evers, Devin Berrios led all players in the game with 28 points, as he knocked down a game-best seven 3's. Keison McIntosh added 17 points and nine rebounds and Naquavah Jackson chipped in with 16 points. Marcus Lewis dished out a game-high 11 assists.

The Mariners return to the court next Wednesday night, Dec. 4, when they travel back to Brooklyn to take on Pratt Institute. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at the Cannoneers' ARC Gym.
