KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 21, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team was defeated at home Thursday night, 51-44, by visiting non-conference opponent Baruch College. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 1-3 on the year, while the Bearcats improve to 2-1.

Sophomore Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) recorded a double-double as he tied for the team-high with 12 points and brought down a game-high 13 rebounds. Senior Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) also drained 12 points and had three steals on the night, while junior James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) contributed offensively with six points.

USMMA trailed most of the first half, including by as many as six points, 15-9, at 8:47, but the Mariners went on an 11-3 run to take a 20-18 lead at 4:34. Baruch finished the scoring in the half with two-straight three-pointers to take a 24-20 advantage into the halftime break.

Again the Bearcats jumped back up by six early in the second half, and again Merchant Marine answered with a run. Senior Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) hit a three at 10:05 to put the Mariners ahead, 32-31. From there the lead changed five more times until Baruch went on a game-changing 15-0 run that gave the visitors a big 51-37 advantage with just 1:12 left.

USMMA made it interesting in the closing minute with the final seven points of the night, but the Bearcats held on for the victory.

For Baruch, junior Adnan Bajrami led all players with 17 points as part of a double-double effort with a team-best 10 rebounds to go along with four assists. Freshman Sean Donnellan added nine points in the win.
