FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (Nov. 17, 2019) – The USMMA men's basketball team lost a neutral-site game to Washington and Lee on Sunday in the consolation game of the Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament hosted by Mary Washington down in Virginia. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 1-2, while the Generals improve to 2-1.
Two players scored in double-figures for Merchant Marine, as junior James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) drained a team-best 12 points, while sophomore Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) added 11. Seniors Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) and Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) chipped in with eight points each, and Morsberger also brought down six rebounds to lead the Mariners.
After trailing most of the first half, the Mariners finished strong and led 28-23 at halftime. They had their lead reach a game-best eight points twice early in the second half, including 34-26 at 18:24. Wash & Lee fought back to tie the game up at 41-41 at 13:39 and then stormed out to a double-digit lead with a 15-2 run to go up by 13 with over five minutes to go. The Generals' advantage only dropped under 10 points once the remainder of the game.
Junior William Brueggeman led three Generals who scored in double-digits, as he had a game-best 18 points and tied for game-high with seven rebounds. Classmate Curtis Mitchell put down 11 points and freshman Richie Manigault added 10.
The Mariners are back in action this Thursday night, Nov. 21, when they host non-conference Baruch College at 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the game will be available with links on the USMMA Men's Basketball Schedule Page.
