FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (Nov. 16, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team was defeated by Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament host Mary Washington on Saturday night, 65-42, on the first day of the tourney at the Eagles' Anderson Center. The loss drops the Mariners' record to 1-1, while UMW improves to 3-0 with the win.
Senior Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) led the Mariners with eight points and tied for the game-high with eight rebounds. Junior James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) added seven points and two Mariner bench players chipped in with six points each – sophomore Jack Bucher (Carlisle, Pa.) and freshman Brandon Bomboy (Yorktown, Va.).
The Eagles started the game on a 14-2 run, but USMMA cut its deficit down to just three points, 19-16, with under eight minutes to play in the opening half. The hosts built its advantage back up to double-digits three more times the remainder of the half and took an 11-point, 34-23 lead into the locker at halftime. Mary Washington used a 19-4 run early in the second half to take complete control of the game and cruise to the victory.
For the Eagles, junior Drew Johnson led all players in the game with 19 points, while also tying Morsberger for the game-high with eight rebounds. Sophomore Da'Shawn Cook also brought down eight boards, while junior Riley Welch contributed 11 points to the win.
The Mariners move onto the consolation game on day two of the tournament and will face Washington and Lee on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Mary Washington's Anderson Center. Only a live stats link will be available for Sunday's game and can be accessed by clicking here.
