KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 12, 2019) – The USMMA men's basketball team pulled away in the second half to top visiting non-conference opponent Hunter College, 56-45, on Tuesday night inside a packed Liebertz Gymnasium.

The Mariners led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but saw that dwindle down to just one point when the Hawks hit a three right before the halftime buzzer to make it 28-27 in favor of the hosts.

The game was close for over 15 minutes of the second half until the Mariners used a 14-2 run that started at 3:53 to gain a double-digit advantage, 50-40, with just over a minute to play before cruising to the 11-point win.

Sophomore Blaine McDonough (Marietta, Ga.) led Merchant Marine with 13 points and tied for the game-high with eight rebounds. He was one of three Mariners to score in double figures – junior James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) had 12 points and senior Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) contributed 10.

Senior Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) added seven points and tied McDonough for the game-high with three steals, while freshman Kevin Doty (Bayport, N.Y.) had six boards and led all players with four blocks.

For Hunter, senior George Keener scored a game-high 16 points, while classmate Gio Gabbidon drained 15 to go along with a team-best eight rebounds and three steals.

Up next, the Mariners will travel down to Fredericksburg, Va., to take part in Mary Washington University's Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament this Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 16-17. They will take on the host Eagles on Saturday at 7 p.m. and will play either Eastern or Washington & Lee on the second day.
