KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 16, 2018) – The USMMA men's basketball team dropped its Skyline- and season-opener at home Tuesday night to visiting Purchase College, 91-57, at the Liebertz Gymnasium. In defeat, the Mariners' open the year 0-1 (0-1 Skyline), while the Panthers improve to 2-2 (1-0 Skyline) with the victory.
Sophomore James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) scored a team-high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting with two three-pointers. Classmate Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) added 12 points, while junior Mike Morsberger (Catonsville, Md.) contributed 11 off the bench.
Purchase shot at an impressive 64.4-percent clip (38-for-59) and also out-rebounded the Mariners 49-19 on the night. Merchant Marine was held to just a 32.8-percent shooting percentage (20-for-61).
For the Panthers, junior Elijah Lott had a double-double with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Four other players recorded double-digit efforts on the night for Purchase, including three starters – senior Mike Felix with 16 points, and senior Michael Soffer and junior Maxx Miller with 11 points apiece, while senior Rob Grullon contributed 14 points off the bench. Felix also recorded eight rebounds and five blocks on the night.
