KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 3, 2018) – The USMMA men's basketball lost its home Skyline Conference rivalry matchup against SUNY Maritime College on Saturday afternoon, 57-51, at the Liebertz Gymnasium. In defeat, the Mariners' record drops to 9-10 (7-8 Skyline), while the Privateers' win improves their record to 9-12 (6-11 Skyline).

Freshman James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) matched the game-high with 18 points and also brought down a team-best six rebounds with two assists and two steals and sophomore Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.J.) added 12 points.

Freshman Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) contributed seven points, while both sophomore Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) and junior David Washington (Frisco, Texas) chipped in with four points apiece. Senior Christian Wittendorf (Granger, Ind.) drained six points off the bench for Merchant Marine.

The Mariners hit the first basket of the game on a layup by Walsh, but the Privateers responded with a three-pointer to take a lead. Tied at 10-10 later in the half, the visitors went on a 15-0 run and took a 25-10 lead at 6:02. USMMA fought back to within five, 27-22, after a 12-2 run, but SUNY Maritime took a 30-22 advantage into the halftime break.

The Privateers' lead hit double-digits again at 17:10 of the second after a layup made the score 36-26. It got up to 12 points a little later, 40-28, but the Mariners responded with an 11-1 run to make it a two-point game, 41-39, with 6:08 to play.

Maritime hit a three on its next possession and Merchant Marine responded with back-to-back baskets, but were unable to tie the score up on the free-throw attempt of an "and-one" at 3:40. At the other end, the Privateers hit one of two from the line before committing a foul and again the Mariners had a chance to tie the score up, but missed both attempts at 3:12 and the visitors remained ahead, 45-43.

After a Maritime layup at 2:14 made it a four-point game, 47-43, USMMA missed its next three attempts from the field and had to rely on fouling down the stretch, but the Privateers drained all 10 of their free-throws in the final minute to secure the victory, despite the Mariners hitting a jumper and two three-pointers in the final 30 seconds.

The Privateers were led by sophomore Brendan McGovern, who matched Walsh's total with 18 points. Senior John Liccese registered 13 points to go along with seven rebounds and a game-high four assists, while sophomore Michael Walker added 10 points and seven boards. Senior big man Patrick MacDonald chipped in with seven points and a game-high 18 rebounds.

The Mariners hit the hardwood next on Wednesday night, Feb. 7, when they travel up to The Bronx to take on Skyline opponent Mount St. Vincent. Tipoff against the Dolphins is scheduled for 7 p.m. at CMSV's Peter Jay Sharp Center. Live stats for the game are available at this link
