Men’s & Women’s Basketball Tripped Up By Catholic At Home, Men Fall By Just One

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 24, 2015) – The USMMA men's and women's basketball teams both lost to visiting Catholic University in a doubleheader of Landmark Conference action at the Liebertz Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The women lost by the final score of 71-34. The Mariners were led by freshman Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) who picked up a double-double with a game-high 11 points and 11 rebounds. USMMA falls to 2-14 (0-11 Landmark) on the season, while the Cardinals improve to 13-5 (7-2 Landmark).

The USMMA women are back in action on Wednesday night, Jan. 21, with a road game at rival Coast Guard. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

On the men's side, the game came down to the very last shot. The Mariners trailed by just one with 1.5 seconds remaining and an in-bound on the Catholic baseline. The pass was to junior David Smith (Lakewood, Wash.), whose potential three-point buzzer-beater hit the front of the rim and ended the game in favor of the Cardinals, 68-67. Smith led all players in the game with 21 points, while sophomore Matt Miller (Augusta, Ga.) contributed 14 points and junior Scott Dennin (Gilbertsville, Pa.) brought down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Catholic had four players score in double figures, led by freshman Jay Howard, who scored 16 points. USMMA falls to 3-14 (0-9 Landmark) while the Cardinals improve to 15-3 (9-0 Landmark).

The Mariner men are back at it on Wednesday night, Jan. 21, with a home Landmark contest against Moravian scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium in O'Hara Hall.
