Ray Named ECAC Football DIII North Rookie Of The Month

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 5, 2019) – The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced the football monthly award winners for October on Tuesday and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy freshman defensive lineman Colton Ray (Bellevue, Ohio) was selected as the league's DIII North Rookie of the Month. 

In four games throughout the month, Ray totaled 24 tackles (13 solo and 11 assisted), including a team-best 4.5 for losses of combined 25 yards and a four sacks. The freshman also recorded a forced fumble and a quarterback hurry. After Ray's 11-tackle, three-sack game in the Mariners' exciting double-overtime win over MIT on Oct. 5, he was named the NEWMAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week and earned a spot on the D3Football.com National Team of the Week.

As a team among national leaders, the Mariners rank in the top-25 in 11 categories listed below: 

  • Tied for first in Blocked Punts Allowed (Zero)
  • Second in Time of Possession (35:58)
  • Third in Rushing Offense (315.9 yards per game), Fourth Down Conversion Percentage (.739) and Punt Return Defense (0.0 yards per return)
  • Fifth in Passing Yards per Completion (18.67ypc)
  • 15th in Passes Had Intercepted (15)
  • 18th in Sacks Allowed (0.86 per game)
  • 19th in Total Offense (470.6 yards per game)
  • 24th in Team Passing Efficiency (169.37)
  • and 25th in Blocked Kicks Allowed (One) 

Individually, two Mariners rank in the top-25 nationally among DIII student-athletes – senior Joe Vitelli (Warrington, Pa.) is first in the country with 202.57 All-Purpose Yards per Game and third with 729 Combined Kick Returns, while classmate Gavin Gartner (Cedar Park, Texas) ranks sixth with 1.29 field goals per game.

The Mariners are back in action this Saturday, Nov. 9, with the home-finale against Catholic on Senior Day. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 12-noon. Prior to the contest, the Mariners will pay tribute to their 19 graduating seniors with a special Senior Day Ceremony.
