KINGS POINT, N.Y. (June 24, 2019) – USMMA football head coach Mike Toop '77 announced the schedule for the upcoming 2019 season on Monday, ahead of his 15th year that at the helm of the Mariners. The team is coming off one of the best seasons in program history, where they went 8-2, tying the program record for wins in a campaign, and winning a bowl game for the second-straight year.
The schedule features a total of nine games – five at home on Tomb Field at Brooks Stadium and four away from Kings Point. All home games are free of charge. Merchant Marine will play two non-conference games to start the year before its seven-game slate against NEWMAC Conference opponents.
The season kicks off on Saturday, Sept. 7, when the Mariners host FDU-Florham in the first meeting between the two schools since 1990, which was the only meeting. After an early-season bye week, the second game of the year is on 2019 Homecoming/Hall of Fame Weekend against industry-rival SUNY Maritime on Saturday, Sept. 21. More info on Homecoming/Hall of Fame Weekend will be available in early September.
The opening month closes out with a second-straight game against a seafaring school, as USMMA will travel up to Castine, Maine, to open up NEWMAC play against Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday, Sept. 28.
The Mariners return home on Saturday, Oct. 5, to host 2018 NEWMAC Champs MIT, before hitting the road again to face Norwich up in Vermont on Saturday, Oct. 12. Merchant Marine then welcomes in Springfield College for another always-entertaining clash with the Pride on Saturday, Oct. 19. October closes out with a trip up to Worcester, Mass., on Saturday, Oct. 26, to take on WPI.
The final month of the season begins with a bye after USMMA's first trimester finals week. The Mariners return to action on Saturday, Nov. 9, for the last home game of the year against Catholic on Senior Day.
The finale is against arch-rival Coast Guard in the Secretaries' Cup matchup on Saturday, Nov. 16, up in New London, Conn. Further details for the rivalry game's broadcast on ESPN will follow.
As mentioned earlier, all home games at Tomb Field are free of charge. If you cannot make it to Kings Point for a game, you can catch all the action live on the USMMA Sports Network, as play-by-play man Jaden Daly returns for his ninth year calling the action.
